Drag Queens of Indiana Ave. 1920’s-1970’s

Central Library
October 17, 2019
7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

The history of drag stretches back to ancient times where performers expressed genders in varying ways on the stage. The impetus for drag queens to take their performances from the theater into clubs begins in the jazz era when Black gay men and Black transgender women openly seized control of the industry and took drag shows in a direction we recognize them today. This presentation will feature a social history of Indianapolis’ drag queens and their role in modernizing drag on a national level.

Presented by: Stephen Lane, Indianapolis Special Collections Librarian, will be our special guest lecturer for this event in our Educational Series. He will present an engaging lecture and conversation on Drag Queens of Indiana. Lane earned a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) and Master of the Arts in Public History (MAH) from IUPUI in December of 2018.
