Update on Bias Crimes Legislation-SB 12

Feb 20th, 2019 • Indy Pride

As many in our community are aware, the Indiana Statehouse is debating legislation to address bias crimes in Indiana. On Tuesday, Feb. 19th, the Senate dramatically amended SB 12 yesterday, stripping references to race, gender identity and sexual orientation. Though there was passionate testimony from the community and Senators to pass the bill with those characteristics protected, it did not sway the opinion of the majority.  Virtually all opposition to this bill has been rooted in homophobia and transphobia. A concerted effort exists to prevent LGBTQ+ Hoosiers from any official recognition or protection at the State level.

We are deeply saddened by this outcome, but more deeply motivated to fight for our voices to be heard. We stand with Governor Holcomb, Indiana Forward, and our Community in support of a comprehensive bias crimes law with enumerated list of characteristics that include: race, religion, color, sex, gender identity, disability, national origin, ancestry, sexual orientation, and age.

Call your State Senator and urge them to fight for our community.
